Capture the pattern

Record the first affected fixture or floor drain, time, weather, odor, material present, and whether neighboring spaces are involved.

A backup through a floor drain, shower, or toilet can carry microorganisms and material from a shared waste path. Keep the affected area isolated and do not move contaminated belongings through clean rooms. Record the first point of entry and every fixture used shortly before it appeared.

Define the affected scope

Internal plumbing, a private lateral, or the public system may be involved. A plumber and BWSC can have different roles in the same incident.

Public-system reporting and private plumbing work can happen in parallel. BWSC may need the location and timing, while a provider may need cleanout access and internal fixture patterns. Keep the two contacts separate so neither is mistaken for the other.

Coordinate the property

Notify the building manager and preserve access to the lowest affected level, cleanout information, and prior backup records.

Compare the proposed path

Ask how the source will be isolated, what inspection supports the finding, and who owns each portion of any proposed repair.

Once flow is restored, the property still needs a cleanup and drying decision. Save the cause finding, cleaning or camera record, photos, disposal record, and any public case number. Ask whether a backwater or lateral question should be evaluated after the immediate incident.

Treat the affected material as contaminated

Do not use a wet vacuum or household cleaning method in standing sewage without appropriate guidance. Isolate the area, prevent children and pets from entering, and keep footwear or tools from carrying material into clean spaces. The cleanup decision follows source control and a health-conscious assessment.

Keep public and private reports aligned

Tell BWSC the property location, time, entry point, and known street or nearby conditions using its official reporting route. Tell the provider the internal fixture pattern, cleanout access, and building history. Keep case numbers and findings together while recognizing that the two parties may evaluate different system segments.

Ask what prevents a repeat

After the immediate line is open, ask whether the evidence supports maintenance, a lateral inspection, repair, or a backwater evaluation. Do not assume a valve is appropriate for every property. Elevation, fixtures, sewer arrangement, code, maintenance, and BWSC requirements need property-specific review.

Prepare the property record

Photograph the entry point and limits of contamination from a clean, safe position before cleanup changes the scene. Note every drain that was in use and whether rainfall or a public notice coincided with the event. Do not walk through the area solely to capture evidence.

When interviewing providers, ask who handles contaminated-water extraction, disinfection, drying, damaged contents, and clearance for reuse. Those tasks may involve different specialists. The plumbing finding should identify how sanitary flow entered and what was done to restore or isolate the line.

Verify the public requirement

BWSC asks people to report sanitary sewer overflows or backups through its official emergency route and warns against contact with sanitary flow.
